#1 flavor highlight (among many contenders) from this Scotland trip: A cask draw of a 38-year-old Glenkinchie, maturing in a European oak puncheon, currently at 58.8%. Indescribably good, and crazily, available on their “Hidden Lowland” tour. The liquid I pulled has been changing in that cask during every moment I’ve been alive, and before. That will always be crazy to think about.

When this year wasn’t about whisky, it was about jiu-jitsu. Thank you, @hbcarlos_oc , and everyone at @graciejiujitsuhuntingtonbeach.

I’ve tasted hundreds of whiskies this year, and this unpeated @raasaydistillery tasting room exclusive (you can bottle it yourself) was easily one of the best. For a 5-year-old, that’s quite a feat. Matured first in ex-rye casks, with a second maturation in ex-vinsanto dessert wine casks, it’s bottled at 56.5% and quite drinkable at that strength. Bottles were generously given to us candidates on Raasay by @sebastiengavillet following the Master of Whisky exams. Thanks again, Sébastien, for a really special gift, and to @alasdairday for making it. To everyone else: If you’ve not yet explored what’s happening at Isle of Raasay Distillery—run, don’t walk!

A highlight from my last tasting foray into LA, generously shared by @theindiansiduation at the famed @bar_jackalope at Seven Grand. Longrow, Springbank Distillery’s heavily peated and double distilled bottling, is always amazingly complex and balanced. The 16-year aged bottling more tightly integrates the smoky notes into its perfumy floral aspect, and the pleasantly “dirty” rustic qualities are softened under a warm blanket of wax and nutty character. Single cask means I’ll never taste the same thing again, but it’s hugely consistent with other Longrow expressions. The standard bottling is one of the great hidden gems around today, given the (justified) madness surrounding @springbank1828.

Another gorgeous bottle from the collection of @theindiansiduation, generously shared with @chasehenry88 and me. One of the most complex whiskies I’ve had, with rich candied oranges, cherries, fresh flowers, wax and leather, integrated with about a billion other notes. Siddharth and I were among the judges in this year’s @whiskycompetition, where it took the top spot, Whisky of the Year.

Lively floral and gentle spice notes anchored in fleshy fruit. One of the most complex, harmonious Scotch whiskies I’ve tasted lately. Thanks to @theindiansiduation for sharing.
